Over 100 iconic landmark buildings and sites across the world turned a shade of green on Monday to honour Ireland’s national holiday.

Many of the world’s most famous hotspots ‘went green’, from London’s Abbey Road to the pyramids in Giza at Paris’ Moulin Rouge, as part of Tourism Ireland’s 2014 Global Greening initiative.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland said: “This is the fifth year of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative, and each year I am delighted to see even more well-known attractions and landmark sites wishing to get involved and join our St Patrick’s celebrations.

“The addition of the Treasury in the ancient city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major success; and in this year of the Winter Olympics, it’s also very fitting that we welcome the Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo, Whistler in Canada and the Skiwelt Söll in Austria to our annual Global Greening.”

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar said it was an extremely effective way of getting the world talking about Ireland on St Patrick’s Day.

“It’s a simple idea with minimal costs, but it’s also an incredibly effective marketing strategy. It gets Ireland on to front pages around the world, at a time of year when people are planning their summer breaks”, he said.

“Having invited the world to Ireland last year, we want to keep the visitors coming. We will also be greening landmarks at home this year and I expect to make an announcement on those very shortly”.

Other landmarks to get the green treatment included the Little Eiffel Tower on Petřín Hill in Prague, the Empire State Building in New York, Canada’s Niagara Falls, the Taj Mahal in India. Berlin’s Alexanderplatz and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.
