London 2-10, Waterford 0-9

By Larry Cooney.

London had seven points to spare over Waterford to earn their first victory of this year’s league campaign at the WIT Sports Campus, Carriganore, last Sunday afternoon.

But the final margin of victory did not reflect just how hard the Exiles had to battle for their deserved reward and especially after playing much of the second half a player down following influential full-back Stephen Curran’s 41st minute dismissal for a second yellow card.

However, an Adrian Moyles 71st minute opportunist goal finally killed off a feisty Deise second half challenge. The visitors had taken command in the first half, inspired by a 9th minute Greg Crowley goal.

The first of the only two green flags in the game, Crowley’s strike opened up a five-point lead before Waterford replied with points from JJ Hutchinson in the eleventh minute and the first of Paul Whyte’s six successful  pointed frees three minutes later.

Conditions were dry to almost ideal in the splendidly appointed ground, which is also the home of Waterford IT, but it was later discovered that medical support was not available to remove an injured London player from the pitch in the second half following a serious rib injury.
