LISA'S NOT DREAMING ANYMORE

Since coming to prominence as a finalist on TG4 talent show, Glór Tíre, Lisa McHugh has quickly established herself as the most exciting young talent in the Irish country world. Honoured already with multiple awards, Lisa is looking forward to her upcoming trip to the UK that includes a performance at The Irish World Awards ceremony this Saturday October 20 at Novotel Hotel, Hammersmith: “I’m delighted to be part of the Irish World Awards show. It should be a fantastic night so we’re all looking forward to it. It’s the first time I’ll be over with my own band so I’m looking forward to bringing the boys over and having a great weekend.”

Although currently based in Donegal, Lisa was born in Scotland and looks forward to revisiting where she grew up also on her current tour: “It’s always great to go back home and see family and friends, let them see the show. They seem to really enjoy it. They’re really supportive so we’re looking forward to going back home aswell.”

Still buzzing from their All-Ireland victory, Donegal is a county that has also supported Lisa: “My mum is originally from Falcarragh so I’ve always had strong connections to there. Donegal has been very supportive to me starting on the road and is somewhere I will always call a second home.”

Some of her support in The O’Donnell County comes from two very famous O’Donnells with Margo even co-writing In The Glow of the Light for Lisa’s album: “Since a very young age my parents have been massive fans of country music, Margo and Daniel O’Donnell. Anytime we were over in Ireland, they would take us as kids to the shows to see them any chance we got. We got to know both Margo and Daniel growing up, kept a very strong connection with them and they’ve been incredibly supportive of me. It’s great to have that support because I’m not sure many people know exactly how successful Margo and Daniel have been in their careers. They’ve been absolutely huge, not only in the UK or Ireland but in America, Australia, Canada. They’re huge successes and to have their support and call them friends is a huge honour indeed.”

Lisa is an amazing singer and performer. I got to see her live and met her at a show in Waterford a couple of years ago. I was completely mesmerised by her performance – showing an effortless versatility that incorporated country, bluesy ballads and Irish songs always delivered with a bluegrass-tinged style. Ever since hearing her on Glor Tire in 2009, I knew she was destined for greatness. As a blues and country singer myself, I can say that it great to see young talent like Lisa put these genres on the Irish map. “A little bit lonely” is one of the greatest songs in the blues-meets-country style and Lisa one of the best singers.
