Dublin woman Marie Bollard is desperately seeking help in finding her brother Patrick Cosgrave whom she has not seen in over 50 years. Patrick came to England, with his last known address in Hammersmith, in the early 60s and met a lady from Bray called Dolores Murray. They had a son and Dolores named him Paul Anthony.
Marie doesn’t know if her nephew’s surname is Cosgrave, Murray or even if Dolores married someone else and gave her child another name. Having a child out of wedlock was frowned upon in those days, and Patrick’s father Thomas was not best pleased. However, when her son’s letters stopped coming from England, his heartbroken mother Kate brought Marie to London regularly to look for him. ‘It was like chasing a ghost,’ said Marie’s daughter Glenda, who is now also involved in the half-century search for her uncle.
The family have had many reported sightings but all have come to nothing. Marie and Patrick were both just teenagers when he left a good job in insurance for a new life in England. If she cannot find her brother alive and well she would love to finally meet her nephew Paul Anthony who was born in 1965.
Glenda phoned Paddy’s last known address in 1999 and was told that a policeman named Patrick Cosgrave had once lived there. But in 2004, she received another phone call and was told the Patrick Joseph Cosgrave was found dead, and had died in 1997.
“We don’t know for sure if that was our Patrick,” she said. “People used to share PPS (NI) numbers and that kind of thing. We have hit a brick wall and Dolores is our only lead.”
Dolores visited Patrick’s parents Kate and Thomas in Henrietta Street in the late 1960s. She told them she was leaving Patrick and the UK and returning to live in Ireland. Kate and Thomas both died in the 1990s without seeing their son or grandson again.
Glenda continues: “My mam is now 68. She was 16 the last time she had any contact with her brother.”
It would mean everything to Marie to find out what became of her brother and perhaps find new family members. Anyone who has any information that might help in the search is asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
