The ever popular Irish singing superstar Daniel O’Donnell has announced to his fans that he will be taking an extended break from touring and recording to enable him to spend more time with his wife Majella, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2013 and who has recently undergone major surgery.

Daniel told fans on his website:  “I am very grateful for all your good wishes and support since last July, it has meant a great deal to both Majella and myself.  We thank God that her treatment and surgery has been successful.  Through all of this we have had a lot of time to reflect and take stock of things and it makes us realise that life is short.

“There will be no shows until at least the middle of 2016.  For me, this was a very big decision, but there a number of things Majella and I want to do and even if we live to be 90 (which I hope we do) I don’t have to say I wish we had taken the time to do such and such… I would also like to thank you at this point for supporting my career over the last 30 years, and I hope when we get back to doing shows, that I will see all of you again.  I want to stress this is not retirement – it’s just a sabbatical”.

To help the Irish Cancer Society, Majella went on National TV in Ireland and had her head shaved and raised over £500,000 for the charity.

Daniel is currently touring in Australia and New Zealand and will return to the UK in April to complete a 13-date Spring tour – his final one before his extended break (see http://danielodonnell.org for dates).

Daniel reached another milestone in his long career when his most recent album ‘A Picture Of You’ entered the British Album chart at No 16 when released in November last year, making it the 26th consecutive year that he has had an album in the UK charts.

Daniel remarked: “I can’t believe it has been twenty-six years since I first entered the UK album chart.  I can only thank all my wonderful fans who have supported me over the years to bring me this remarkable success”.
