Last June the British and Irish Lions defeated Australia by two Tests to one.  For the deciding match head coach Warren Gatland took the brave step of dropping Ireland’s legendary Brian O’Driscoll.

A nation felt slighted; how could he have the effrontery to leave out our national hero? As it turned out his decision was vindicated as his Welsh-dominated team easily won the final Test. Job done as far as Gatland was concerned.

However, in a recent interview, on none other than The Late Late Show, Gatland admitted that his actions may come back to bite him. He was referring to the much anticipated confrontation between Wales, who he also coaches, and Ireland this Saturday in Dublin.

Gatland also left out Ireland’s outstanding No.8 Jamie Heaslip in favour of Welshman Toby Faletau and in Sunday’s post match press conference after Ireland’s victory over Scotland, Heaslip admitted that he was relishing the opportunity to take on his Welsh Lion teammates.
