Tir Chonaill Gaels 1-09, St Kiernan’s 2-05

By Damian Dolan.

Tir Chonaill Gaels moved a step closer to defending their county title but only it was a mightily close run thing as the Greenford side finished the game with 14-men.

The Greenford side had looked comfortable after recovering from Mark Mulholland’s early goal for Kiernan’s, but Mark Gottsche’s second half dismissal, just ten minutes after coming on, opened the door for Kiernan’s.

Adrian Moyles’ penalty ensured a tight finish to this second semi-final, but the county champions held out to set up a repeat of last year’s final with Kingdom Kerry Gaels, and condemn Kiernan’s to a fourth consecutive semi-final defeat.

This one will be particularly hard for Kiernan’s to take. Chris Byrne’s side could not have asked for a better start as the excellent Greg Lyons picked out John O’Connor to open the scoring and then Mulholland got the all important touch to Moyles’ free to beat Gavin McEvoy and raise the green flag.
