A scene from the play

By David Hennessy

The Tower Theatre presents Terence Rattigan’s classic The Deep Blue Sea. Rattigan himself once explained “The phenomenon of love is inexplicable in terms of logic. That was the theme of The Deep Blue Sea”.

Looking at love and emotional truth in post war Britain, the play centres on Hester Collyer, the wife of a judge in the socially suffocating climate of 1950s London. Her passion for a former RAF pilot has edged her to the limits of ‘respectable’ society; and as his ardour has cooled, her despair has increased.

The play addresses the consequences of forbidden love in a stiflingly judgemental society. Sometimes seen as partly inspired by Rattigan’s own experiences as a gay man, the play has one of the great female roles of post-war English theatre and a beautifully drawn range of supporting characters.

The Tower Theatre Company, founded in 1932 celebrated its 80th anniversary last year and has always aimed to provide high quality, broadly based, affordable drama and enable people of all ages and backgrounds to experience every aspect of live theatre. It currently has more than 700 members and friends and presents up to 18 productions a year.

The Tower Theatre present The Deep Blue Sea, directed by Lesley Strachan, until March 30 at The Bridewell Theatre (off Fleet Street). For more information, go to: www.towertheatre.org.uk.
