Ann Rowan, the actress who played Julia Mac in popular RTÉ soap The Riordans has died aged 85.

She passed away on Sunday, August 10, aged 85, after a short illness. She is survived by her two sisters, her nieces and nephews.

Ann Rowan also starred in Ulysses, Fair City, Father Ted, Christmas at Castle Backtax, The Government Inspector, Last House, The Wild Duck and The Lilac Bus.

The rural soap, which ran from 1965 to 1979, was set in the fictional townland of Leestown in County Kilkenny.

It is said that its use of Outside Broadcast Units and its filming of its episodes on location rather than in studio, broke the mould of soap operas were made, and inspired the creation of its British equivalent, Emmerdale Farm (now called Emmerdale) by Yorkshire Television in 1972.
