The backpacker, 25, was charged with “concealing the birth of a child that died before or after birth”, police in Western Australia told ABC News.

The woman had been travelling in the remote Kimberley region in North Western Australia with a group of friends.

It is believed she hadn’t realised she was expecting. She had the baby in May, alone in the town of Halls Creek.

It is alleged the woman then hid the newborn, not telling her friends until days after the event what had happened. They then took her to a local hospital, where workers there notified police.

Western Australia’s major crime squad were drafted in to investigate the death of the baby and the woman was subsequently charged with concealing the birth.

She appeared at Kununurra Magistrates Court at the end of May when the case was referred to Perth Magistrates Court, where she is due to appear in October.

The woman has not entered a plea.
