ALEX, a fun-loving 3 year old from Cork, suffers from cerebral palsy. As a result, his only way of getting around is in his wheelchair.

But the bubbly little boy has been offered the opportunity of a life-changing operation, called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, which will enable him to walk unaided.

Alex’s family have decided to take this opportunity, with the operation to take place at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, U.S. However, as they need to fund the entire cost of the operation, which is €60,000, they have appealed for the public’s help to get them there.

Friend and fundraiser Anne Pike told the Irish World: “We are inviting businesses, clubs, individuals – anyone that reads this and feels moved to help – to do so in any way they can.

“If you are in the Cork area, ‘Team Alex’ will be taking part in The Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon on September 28, and we would love more people to sponsor the event. Everything we raise will bring Alex a little closer to being able to walk.”
