A concert featuring Mayo and Manchester’s Irish musicians, singers and dancers launched the Diaspora weekend in the Fr Peyton Centre on Saturday 2 August in Attymass, North Mayo.

The concert featured Joe Keegan from the BBC TV series The Voice, who received a  standing ovation for his show  stopping performance which showed why he was one of Kylie Monogue’s favourite performers on the show.

He said “I love it here in Attymass, I would move here tomorrow. I really enjoyed the show and coming over to be part of this very special weekend.”

Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin a naive of Attymass officially launched the concert and commented in her opening speech “We are delighted to welcome back Mayo Manchester to Attymass after their record breaking 2013 Gathering and their sell out show Mayo Tourism weekend in Dublin in January.”

Tony Hennigan from Mayo Manchester added: “It was  a fantastic concert and the performers were exceptional, we were delighted to have been invited back by Failte Ireland and Mayo County Council to stage this special diaspora weekend and our annual Business and Tourism lunch at the Bonniconlon show on Monday.

“Attymass holds a very special place in our hearts as its where my mother anf father were born and n our minds its the centre of the Universe.I was delighted to see the 2014 Mayo person of the Year – John Walkin whose mother was born in Attymass in the audience tonight.”

The concert supported by Failte Ireland and Mayo.ie featured performances from the Attymass based Bofield Ceili Band who are one of Ireland’s longest running Ceili bands and were established in 1900.

Other performers included the Mayo based Atlantic Rhythm dancers and musicians, plus Lawrence Hennigan Junior from the Keegan Academy of Irish Dance and the Horkan family from Straide.
