A man horrifically beheaded by the fanatical group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was Irish-American journalist, James Wright Foley, it has emerged.

Foley, footage of whose gruesome death was released by the fanatical group in recent days had a British accent, went missing in Syria in 2012.

The video shows a jihadist speaking with a British accent beheading an American journalist in what it says is a revenge killing for the ongoing US air strikes in Iraq.

The message in the video, which is entitled A Message to America, warned President Barack Obama that there was more come – including the beheading of a second journalist.

The execution of James Foley follows nearly two weeks of US air strikes that have pounded militant positions and stopped Isis extremists advancing. Unmtil this month, they had relatively easily managed to capture a third of Iraq.

The footage also reveals images of another US journalist, Steven Sotloff, whose life militants said was dependent on America’s reaction.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, condemned the killing as “one more example in a catalogue of brutality” by “evil” Isis.

“Isis are waging war on moderate Islamic opinion and they are waging war on the West and we have to deal with them on that basis,” he added.

He said the person shown decapitating Mr Foley “appears to be British” and experts are urgently investigating the man’s identity.
