Two elderly nuns from Dublin were drowned at Inch Beach in County Kerry last night, as confirmed by their order of the Presentation Sisters.

Sr Imelda Carew and Sr Paula Buckley were spotted getting into difficulties by a lifeguard, and a rescue operation was started by the Valentia Coastguard immediately, where they were given CPR on the beach after being taken from the water.

The two nuns, aged 67 and 70, were airlifted by a coastguard helicopter which was dispatched from Shannon and taken to Tralee Hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

In a statement the Presentation Sisters said: “It is with great regret that we confirm the deaths of Sr Imelda Carew and Sr Paula Buckley, members of the South East Province of the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary following a tragic drowning accident in Kerry.

“The sisters were on holiday in Kerry and got into difficulties during an early evening swim at Inch Strand.”
