A Kentish town man in his early 20s has been jailed for 12 months and placed on the sexual offences register after he was caught in possession of indecent images of children.

Eliott Diffley, 24, of Leighton Road, NW5, pleaded guilty at Blackfriars Crown Court yesterday to 18 counts after being caught with the images last October.

On 26 October 2013, PC Crossan, from Islington borough, was on foot patrol on Parkhurst Road when he smelt cannabis and noticed Diffley smoking.

As the officer approached him, Diffley discarded an item, so he was searched, but no drugs were found.

However, one his person were two mobile phones, one of which had been reported as stolen. Diffley was arrested for handling stolen goods.

During a search at the police station, a USB stick dropped from his buttocks. Diffley said he had stolen it from an internet café in Islington and was further arrested for theft.

The USB stick was examined and officers discovered indecent imagines of children. Officers carried out a search warrant at Diffley’s home address and a large quantity of items were seized. Diffley was arrested for possessing indecent images of children.

The subsequent investigation found that the USB had not been reported as stolen. Islington CID carried out an investigation with specialist forensic assistance to access the stick and phone devices. An internet search history showed that Diffley had actively been looking on the internet relating to the offence.

PC Adam Crossan, said: “This case has been handled with the utmost professionalism by all of the officers involved. People have preconceptions of the type of person who commits this type of crime and Diffley challenges that idea.

“The public should be reassured that investigation into any form of child abuse is taken very seriously and we will work tirelessly to bring offenders like Diffley to justice.”
