Irish actor Aidan Turner, 31, best known for his dwarf character Kili in the Hobbit trilogy, was seen indulging in a spot of heroics recently.

The 31 year old Being Human star was at the Odessa Internal Film Festival when he tackled a mugger he saw trying to steal a fan’s handbag outside the city’s Hotel Bristol.

Turner had stopped to speak to a young female fan when a passing cyclist grabbed the girl’s bag and sped off with it.

The actor is luckily a lot taller and speedier than his on-screen character and was quickly able to catch up with the assailant, pulling him off his bike and taking the handbag. But as others stopped to see what the fuss was about, the thief managed to flee.

Turner said he had not been sure what rules applied to citizens arrests in the country and after recovering the bag simply gave it back to his fan, who must be more in awe of the actor than ever now.

On being dubbed a hero following the event he joked to the Mirror: “It’s great to be a real hero for a change rather than just an on-screen one. I think the rescue though was more like something from Indiana Jones than the Hobbit.”

Other guests in attendance in Odessa were Lord David Puttnam and director Stephen Frears, who all had wanted to lend their support to the event given the current conflict in the Ukraine.

The actor was at the festival in Odessa in between location filming for the upcoming remake of classic 70s BBC series Poldark. A romantic saga based on the novels by Winston Graham, which sees Turner play the titular character, a British officer who returns to Cornwall after escaping as a POW following the Revolutionary War.
