The Islamicity Index ranks countries on how well they adhere to the Koran – and the top three countries are European – Ireland, Denmark and Luxembourg.

No single majority Muslim country made it into the top 25 of the index, with Malaysia 33rd on the list and Saudi Arabia 91st.

The survey rated 208 countries on an Islamicity Index, and the top 37 spots were occupied by non-Muslim countries.

Hossein Askari, a Professor of International Business and International Affairs at George Washington University, compile the table along with colleague Scheherazade S. Rehman.

He said Islamic values have been implemented more successfully in non-Muslim countries than in countries where the majority of the population is Muslim.

Mr Askari told the BBC World Service that Muslim countries do badly on such lists, as Islam is a rules-based religion which leads to economic prosperity and success, and that the reality was that all those involved in crimes were people who understood religious teachings and were seemingly devoted.

“Those who break the law are people who know the law. Some people are very diligent in donating to places of worship but they are also diligent in embezzling state funds. Some are good at giving alms but are as good at extorting others.”

The number of Muslims resident in Ireland has gone up since the 1990s, though the majority are not Irish nationals. According to the 2011 census there are 49,204 Muslims in Ireland, making up 1.07% of the country’s population.
