Warwickshire 1–15, Leitrim 2–09

By Parick Leddy.

In a contest to avoid the Lory Meagher Cup wooden spoon a gutsier Warwickshire, who finished with 13 players, overcame Leitrim’s 14 men in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday.

It was by no means a dirty game but in the last ten minutes Leitrim’s Kevin McGrath seen red following an off the ball incident while Warwickshire’s Shane Cullen received his second yellow a minute later and just before the finish Sean Hennessy was red carded.

Prior to Saturday’s win over Leitrim, Warwickshire had suffered defeats at the hands of Fermanagh and Longford. However the Warwickshire men certainly lifted their game to finish the season on a high when disposing of the Leitrim challenge.

In the early stages of the Carrick-on-Shannon clash it seemed Warwickshire might chalk up a runaway win against their hosts who struggled in many areas of the field. However a Leitrim goal prior to halftime after they had gone scoreless for some eighteen minutes prior to that seemed to breathe some new life into the home side.

The game was put into the melting pot early in the second half when Leitrim found the back of the Warwickshire net and closed the gap on their opponents to just a point. However that was as close as Leitrim managed to get to Warwickshire who thereafter sternly prevented them from turning the game around.
