Fermanagh 2-17, Warwickshire 0-18

By Damien O’Grady.

A blistering opening 12 minutes from Fermanagh laid the foundations for a vital win in the opening round of the Lory Meagher Cup against current holders Warwickshire at a sun drenched Pairc na hEireann on Saturday afternoon.

Having had a number of tight encounters over the last number of years another close contest was expected, but the manner in which Fermanagh dominated the early stages looked like it could be a one-sided affair.

Credit, though, must go to Warwickshire who fought back from a disastrous opening to eventually taking the lead before a strong finish from the visitors saw them claim the victory.

Fermanagh were off the mark inside the second minute with a free from corner forward Sean Corrigan before Brendan McGarry pounced on a mix up in the Warwickshire back line to fire home the first goal of the game in the fifth minute.

McGarry continued his impressive start to the game with two further points in the early stages with Shea Curran and Thomas Cleary also getting on the score sheet to ensure that the entire Fermanagh half forward line had scored inside the opening ten minutes. Fermanagh extended that lead even further two minutes later when midfielder Francis McBrien added another point to open up a 1-6 to 0-0 lead.
