Kerry-born actor Michael Fassbender has been announced as one of the nominees for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s BAFTAs.

It is for as his role as a nasty plantation owner in Steve McQueen’s upcoming slavery film Twelve Years A Slave.

The film has got a total of 10 nominations, but it is Gravity that leads the charge with 11, including Best Film, Best Actress (Sandra Bullock) and Best Director (Alfonso Cuarón).

12 Year’s a Slave is also up for Best Film, with Steve McQueen, and Fassbender’s co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o also nominated.

Other films to have received multiple nominations include American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Philomena, Saving Mr Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, Philomena is about an Irishwoman’s search for the son that was taken away from her as a newborn.

Nominated for the Outstanding Debut award are Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson, who wrote Good Vibrations.

It tells the true story of incorrigible Belfast music man Terri Hooley, who ran a record shop in Belfast when the Troubles were at their worst.

The winners will be announced at the BAFTA ceremony in London on Sunday, February 16.
