ARTS AND FEATURES — 02 December 2013

By Neil Doolin

THE Liverpool Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann has held its first Class Fleadh at St Michaels Irish Centre, which was named in memory of the late great Liverpool Irish fiddler, Sean McNamara.

The Class Fleadh had two aims, firstly to annually remember the life and music of Sean McNamara, a founding member of Liverpool CCE and secondly, an opportunity to assess the talent of our young musicians, singers and dancers within the branch and provide them an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

The Fleadh was honoured by the attendance of  two of Sean’s daughters, Maire and Anne who made the presentation of the newly  Sean McNamara Memorial Trophy for Most Promising Young Musician within the Liverpool branch, which was awarded to Ciara Owens. Michelle O’Leary of Manchester Comhaltas adjudicated the competitions in music, song and dance.

A lovely afternoon was had by all, including teachers, parents and young people, and highlighted the brilliant young talent that is now been nurtured in Liverpool which will ensure the continuation of Irish culture through music, song and dance for generations to come.

The Sean McNamara Class Fleadh has now been established as an annual event and will contribute to the development and maintenance of Irish cultural traditions in Liverpool and Merseyside.
