As one of four Cork natives on the St Gabriel’s panel, Pat Sloane is understandably looking forward to locking horns with Youghal at Ruislip on Sunday.

It won’t be the first time. With just 25 miles separating Youghal from Sloane’s hometown club, Cobh, it won’t be the first time the Gabriel’s half forward has lined out them, and he’s even joined forces with some of their number in the Imokilly Division, in East Cork.

“I can’t wait to play them actually. I was hoping they’d come through to be honest – I was delighted,” said Sloane, who expects manager Tommy Duane to pull himself aside ahead of Sunday to get the lowdown on their opponents.

“I played against them years ago when our club was intermediate – I’ve played against them a few times. We lost championship games to them by a point.

“They’re very good; they’re a solid team. I know a few of their players, the Ring brothers, they’ve been playing well and Brendan was man of the match in the Munster final. I was looking through their team and they’re fairly solid all over – I don’t think they have any weak points.”
