A YOUNG footballer from Mayo has died in a road traffic accident in the Middle East, mere weeks after he emigrated there.

Darragh Walsh from The Neale near Cong died when he was in a crash in Qatar last Thursday.  It is understood that he had been out with friends after work and was a passenger in a taxi at the time.

The 22 year old had only been in Qatar two weeks to begin working with an Irish company there, having spent the previous year working in London.

He was from a well-known GAA family in South Mayo – dad Gerry is chairman of The Neale club.

A statement from The Neale GAA club read: “Crushingly bad news. The club is devastated with the news of the tragic death of Darragh Walsh. Simply hard to believe.

“We will all miss you. Truly only the good die young. Our thoughts are with Gerry and Miriam and his brothers and sisters and his extended family and friends.”

As a mark of respect to Darragh a minute’s silence was observed before Sunday’s Connacht club SFC final between Castlebar Mitchels and St. Brigid’s.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance to the family to bring his remains home.

Darragh, the third child in his family, is survived by his parents, Gerry and Miriam, two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral is expected to take place at some time this week.
