DJ Carey lifts the 2003 All-Ireland

By David Hennessy

Hurling fans will have a chance to meet one of the game’s greats when Kilkenny legend DJ Carey comes to London this weekend.

The London branch of the Kilkenny Supporters  Club will host a Q and A with the hurling star at Gipsy Hill Tavern this Saturday August 3.

Carey played with The Cats from 1990 until 2005. In this time, he won five All-Irelands, ten Leinster championships, four National Leagues and earned nine All Stars.

The Gowran club man is Kilkenny’s third highest scorer of all time (behind Eddie Keher and Henry Shefflin) and is often spoken about as one of the best hurlers of all time.

In April last year, Carey was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny after collapsing from a suspected heart attack. Soon afterwards, he was reported to be in a stable condition.

Carey will be releasing a book about his hurling career later this year.

Established last year, the London branch of the Kilkenny Supporters Club has already had visits from Kilkenny greats such as Michael Kavanagh while RTE pundit and Irish World columnist Tomas Mulcahy has chaired Q and A sessions.

Last November, Kilkenny captain Eoin Larkin and all star corner back Paul Murphy were brought to London by the club for a training session with the kids at St Paul’s school as well as bringing the Liam McCarthy Cup to the grave of Liam McCarthy.

Kilkenny midfield great Liam “Chunky” O’Brien, winner of four All Irelands and Galway’s Iarla Tannian were also in London for this weekend.

A Q and A with legendary hurler DJ Carey takes place at 8pm at Gipsy Hill Tavern on Saturday August 3. For more information, you can call Pat Byrne on 07711851836. You can also find the club at http://www.facebook.com/cmonthecats.
