It’s been a great season but Coggins and London are already looking forward

By David Hennessy

London manager Paul Coggins has spoken of his pride at his team’s historical 2013 season and his belief that The Exiles will build on its success. London were defeated 1-17 to 1-8 by Cavan in Croke Park on Saturday, six days after playing Mayo in their first Connacht final.

“I’m very proud of the way the team adapted to Croke Park on Saturday,” said Coggins. “We played at a very high level for most of the game on Saturday. We were right with Cavan all the way during the game. We’ve a great sense of pride and I hope the people of London who were watching it both there and here were proud of their team. London will build on this”

Coggins’ three year contract as London manager is now up. When asked about possibly renewing the agreement, the London boss answered: “That’s something that will be discussed over the coming weeks. I enjoy doing the job. I think we’ve made good progress and I think there’s a great future there. If the ambition is there from everybody involved, then my ambition is there too. But we’re not going to make any decisions just yet.”

When asked if London can retain this unit of players for future seasons, Coggins says: “All you hope is that you can keep the squad together as much as possible. Hopefully that will happen but it’s not going to happen fully because that’s just the way the world is.  Already Caolan Doyle will be leaving at the end of August so there’s one straight away. London being London, there will be a change over but it’s usually for the better when people come in.

“I just want to thank everybody for their brilliant support all summer. I would just ask them to, when the National League starts, to keep backing London footballers and hurlers.”
