Robert Emmetts 0-15, Fulham Irish 2-09

By Damian Dolan.

A superb second half comeback saw Fulham Irish very nearly mark their Senior Championship debut with a famous victory over Robert Emmetts at Ruislip on Sunday.

Last year’s intermediate champions trailed Emmetts by six points at half-time, but two Kevin McHugh goals in the space of a minute inspired the south Londoners and Shane O’Donnell’s strike a minute from time secured a deserved draw.

It was a result and performance that allayed fears that Fulham Irish might do a ‘Michael Cusacks’ and return back down to intermediate just as swiftly as they arrived. While St Gabriels and Kilburn Gaels are most peoples’ favourites to contest this year’s final, precisely who’ll make the drop down to intermediate will be a much more hotly debated topic after this result.

For Emmetts, having been deprived of so many players, it’s hard to see them challenging for the title on this evidence.

McHugh gave Fulham the lead in the first minute but thereafter Emmetts settled and frees from player/manager Fergus McMahon (2) and Kevin McMullan (2) saw them take a three-point lead, although there was little to choose between the sides.
