London’s Danny Ryan on the attack against Limerick

London fight-back falls just short

Limerick          1-09

London            1-08

By Damian Dolan

What London wouldn’t have given for a Russian linesman at Ruislip on Sunday? When Cathal McGee crashed a shot off the underside of the Limerick crossbar and away to safety the Exiles cursed their bad luck. Just as they would when Mark Gottsche’ 45 sailed over the bar in injury time to bring the home side to within a point, only for Leitrim referee Ray McBrien to rule for it to be retaken.

Gottsche sent the retake wide, and although Eoin O’Neill then brought the Exiles to within a point, time would eventually run out on London’s gallant comeback. A fight-back that had the Limerick bench pleading for the final whistle, and the Exiles wishing they hadn’t given the Division 4 leaders an eight point head start.

Limerick have developed a knack for coming out on the right side of such close encounters this year, but they were fortune to escape Ruislip with a victory that keeps them on course for promotion, and what’s more they knew it.
