Having never previously made it past the All Britain semi-finals you’d have got long odds on Cardiff’s St Colmcilles being in the final on November 18, but Des Gilleran’s side are there, and what’s more, they’re there on merit.

While the club owed its semi-final appearance to the absence of the Warwickshire and Hertfordshire champions from this year’s tournament, victory over Scotland champions Tir Chonaill Harps proved the Cardiff club worthy of a first-ever final appearance.

“It’s a great achievement for the club,” said Gilleran. “We’ve come out of Gloucestershire in other years and being hammered by other teams, but the last two or three years there’s been a concerted effort that we can go further.

“We’ve got a core of players who’ve been around Cardiff anywhere from 15 years to two years. There’s no students on the team. A lot of effort has gone in over the years to push the game on.
